Bible Teachings

PRAYER STARTS WITH GOD — PRAYER IS GOD'S IDEA

“And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”
Isaiah 65:24

Before you even hit your knees, God is already there, waiting in prayer. He meets His children in prayer because prayer begins with Him — not with us. The very desire to pray is evidence of God’s greater desire to communicate with us.The idea that He is already there, waiting, speaks to His love and intimacy. That yearning we feel to pray? It’s like a divine echo — His voice calling us before we even speak.

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws them.”
— John 6:44

When we feel the urge to pray, it is because God is drawing us — He has something to say. He is the initiator. This flips the whole perspective on prayer. It's not just us trying to get God's attention; it's God lovingly drawing us into conversation. The whisper in our spirit, that nudge to kneel or speak — it's His voice first.

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.”
— Philippians 2:13

For over 40 years, I believed I was the one starting my prayers. But in truth, God had already begun the conversation. The answer to your prayer is often prepared before you ever ask. That urge to talk to God about your needs comes from His Spirit gently stirring your heart.

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
— Romans 8:26

Even when you don’t know what to say, God is already speaking through you. He prays with us, through us, and focus. There's such comfort in knowing we’re never praying alone — even our silence is sacred because He fills the gaps.

“You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; You encourage them, and You listen to their cry.”
— Psalm 10:17

That desire to pray is not human effort — it’s divine encouragement.

Prayer begins in the mind of God, invades our minds, and draws us into communion with Him. He is more ready to listen than we are to speak! When crisis strikes and you suddenly feel the urge to pray, that sense of urgency is God invading your heart with His peace and presence.

“Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”
— Jeremiah 29:12–13

When you’re talking with someone and suddenly feel the need to pray for them, know this: God is quickening you. That prompting is divine, not just emotional. It is never you first.

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you... and I will move you to follow My decrees.”
— Ezekiel 36:26–27

Everything we have is a gift — even our prayers, our faith, our love. God prays through each of His children. His Words become our words. It is not our eloquence that brings transformation — it’s His Word flowing through us.

“You who answer prayer, to You all people will come… Blessed are those You choose and bring near.”
— Psalm 65:2–4

God watches over His Word, not ours, to perform it. We’ve often thought prayer meant figuring out what to say to God — but prayer is first about listening, being available, and allowing His Spirit to pray through us.

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence…”
— Hebrews 4:16

We come boldly not because of our strength, but because He invited us in. Prayer is never us reaching up first — it is always God reaching down in love.

“One day Jesus was praying… the disciples said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’”
— Luke 11:1

Even the disciples’ desire to pray was stirred by watching God the Son pray. He invites us to do the same.

“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you… as soon as He hears, He will answer you.”
— Isaiah 30:18–19
